Ardalan

Ardalan

Stage: Bingo Dome
Also Playing Afterparty at HiFi Nightclub
Day & Time: Friday 9pm

Range, appeal, and a massive dose of nasty, gritty bass are the three chief weapons every Dirtybird artist has in his or her quiver, but Ardalan seems to be the peak culmination of all those assets in one wieldy point. This young archer has had the incomprehensible luck to fall into crew with his idols, be reared by their best and given some of their most guarded musical secrets, then hoisted to a platform to blare his prodigious beats from places where most creators can only dream of being.

Born in Tehran, Iran, Ardalan possesses a peculiar, fresh perspective on music genesis without even trying. His mixes, remixes and dubs are known for their sass, energy and wickedly wry samples that snap like a wet towel to the face, but his original records are where his efforts shine, like those released with Justin Martin —“Mr. Spock,” a 2010 party anthem charted by Diplo and Jesse Rose, “LEZGO,” charted by Dog Blood (Skrillex and Boyz Noise) and “Function”, the 2015 banger that keeps giving — as well as two of his own EP’s that were released on Dirtybird, “The Yeah / No” and “Thunderdad”. It is no wonder he has been given the nod by everyone, from Papa Dirtybird himself (Claude VonStroke) and A-Trak, to those who are charting his remixes, like Maya Jane Coles, Audiojack, and Riva Starr.

The greatest strength in Ardy’s music is his ability to whip out hits that work equally well from the dankest basements to the most opulent dance-floors; sounds that satisfy those with diverse tastes who can unite under his single agenda of having a good time.

Kytami

Stage: Big Top
Day & Time: Friday 7pm

Having been trained as a classical violinist from the age of four, there is no doubt Kytami has mastered her skills on the instrument. Known for creating a musical symbiosis between her performance and her audience, Kytami has dipped her violin's bow into numerous genres during her widespread musical career. She has appeared in festivals worldwide, was invited to speak and perform at TedX Victoria and received the Western Canadian Music Award for Electronic/Dance Album of the Year for her self-titled 2012 release "Kytami."

2017 has kicked off with a bang for this violin diva with the release of the long-anticipated "Renegade" album on East Van Digital (produced by Phonik Ops & Beatsmith). She also appeared on select dates with Datsik on the Ninja Nation tour as well as a WODNB performance in Victoria, BC with the Prototypes and DJ SS. Accompanying the gritty drum and bass/electronica backing provided by Phonik Ops, Kytami flawlessly delivers a no-nonsense, magnetic performance on the violin and throws in pieces of musical stylings from across the map, including elements of drum n bass, dubstep, hip hop, and punk rock, to create an unforgettable and mesmerizing experience.

Since 2011 Kytami has developed a steadily growing reputation for her dynamic performances with appearances at festivals and major events such as Vancouver Jazz Fest, Shambhala, Rifflandia, Centre of Gravity, Connect Festival, Tall Tree Music Festival, 403 DnB's Metropolis, CMW, Music Matters and Rock the Shores, as well as opening for acts like Dub FX and Dieselboy. Kytami brings her absolute all to every performance, orchestrating the crowds with her violin bow and commanding an urge, a compulsion, a need that drives into the audience to get up, dance, and go uncontrollably crazy.

This isn't Kytami's beginning. This girl has been here, there, and everywhere in between, and will continue to do so. Nor is this anywhere near the end. We are going to see Kytami both continually defying and creating musical revolutions for a long time to come.

Keys N Krates (Dj Set)

Keys N Krates (Dj Set)

Stage: Big Top
Day & Time: Saturday 8:30 PM

Since forming a decade ago in their native Toronto, Keys N Krates have carved their own path via a bass-centric, sample-driven sound which melds the realms of electronic, hip-hop and beyond. The group—composed of drummer Adam Tune, keyboardist David Matisse and turntablist Jr. Flo.—has built a venerable reputation as one of the leading live electronic acts today on the strength of their onstage instrumentation and energetic sets. Keys N Krates now elevate their craft with Cura, their debut artist album.

Reflecting a sonic evolution many years in the making, Cura sees Keys N Krates evolving from revered instrumental beat-makers into musically sophisticated producers and songwriters. Cura embodies Keys N Krates’ matured style of now: soulful electronic music created with an organic touch, allowing for open experimentation and sonic curiosity. On “Music to My Ears,” dynamic strings and reverberant bass provide a joyous backbone to Grammy-nominated vocalist Tory Lanez’ uplifting hook. On “Glitter,” a slow-burning romp through disco-tinged future R&B, the group slathers the groove-laden cut with satiny synths and distorted strings alongside the vocals of rising sensation Ambré. “Do What U Do” revisits the sample based, boom-bap beats and harmonious vocal layers that have become a keystone of the Keys N Krates aesthetic. Elsewhere, the hard-hitting instrumental “Flute Loop,” featuring Ouici, is a frenetic bomb exploding with trap-leaning muscle, while “My Night” boasts hallucinogenic production accentuated by 070 Shake’s haunting sung / rap vocal.

Keys N Krates first broke into the mainstream with the SOLOW EP (Dim Mak, 2013), featuring the breakthrough single “Dum Dee Dum,” which recently received gold certification in the US in 2017. Since its release, the track’s cheeky official music video was nominated for a Prism Prize by the Association for Music and Innovative Arts in Canada as well as a Berlin Music Video Award in Germany in 2014. In 2013, the group later released a remix of the track featuring a collection of buzzing Chicago-based rappers, including G.O.O.D. Music’s Cyhi the Prynce as well as King Louie and Tree. Elsewhere, the group released “Keep It 100” (Mad Decent, 2014), a collaboration with producer/DJ Grandtheft, which was featured in a trailer for the animated film Minions in 2015 and won for Best EDM/Dance Video in the 2015 Much Music Video Awards in Canada. In 2016, Keys N Krates took home their first win at the Juno Awards in Canada in the Dance Recording of the Year category for their song “Save Me,” off the Midnite Mass EP (Dim Mak, 2016), featuring British singer/songwriter Katy B. The group’s discography also includes the Every Nite EP (Dim Mak, 2014) as well as numerous remixes.

Originally formed as a live hip-hop act in 2008, Keys N Krates have since logged countless hours on the road via a relentless tour schedule and have been recognized for advancing the live performance aspect within electronic music. They have headlined their own tours and performed high-profile sets at the top international music festivals including Coachella, Sónar, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Tomorrowland, EDC Las Vegas, Pukkelpop, Bestival and more. Keys N Krates will spend 2018 on an extensive world tour in support of Cura, performing headlining shows across the US, Canada, and Europe, with additional shows in Asia and Australia. In-between tour stops, they are set to grace festival stages at Sónar Hong Kong, Ultra Music Festival, and Electric Forest.

While Cura marks the crew’s debut full-length album, it, too, initiates a first step toward a new creative vision, a breakthrough in sound and a new beginning for Keys N Krates.

Freak Motif

Freak Motif

Stage: Big Top
Day & Time: Saturday 1:30 PM

Way back, in the dry hot summer of 2009.....

The Wednesday Night Jam took off when a group of strangers picked up their instruments and went parading through downtown Calgary. Sharing a love of improvised music, funk, soul, disco, afrobeat, and reggae, the Jam sparked a movement which has evolved into an 8-piece dance party called FREAK MOTIF.

Their live show is inspired by the spontaneity of their weekly jam sessions. Someone yells out a key, the percussion lights up, the band settles into a groove, The Weapons of Brass Destruction pierce the air with a melody, then vocalists and rappers step to the stage with the verse and a hook.

The band started recording some of their jam sessions and composing songs, releasing their first album LA CASA BLANCA in December 2012. In keeping with the improvisation spirit, most of the tracks on the album were written, arranged, and recorded in a single session. “Refined, cleverly arranged, and catchy as f**k”- ffwd magazine.

They released their follow up ACROSS THE NATION in January 2014. The title is a nod to the Freaks' collaborations with musicians from Montreal to California to New Orleans. If you boiled down a Freak Motif show to 10 minutes, it would be these 4 “Superb, groove-soaked, spaced-out instrumentals" - Calgary Herald.

On July 1, 2014 Freak Motif released KILLIN' ME, a limited edition 7” on Calgary funk/afrobeat label KEPT Records. Featuring longtime collaborator Lady C on the A-side and the Busty and the Bass horns on the flip. "Modern funk of the very highest caliber.” - Craig Charles, BBC Radio 2.

Their live shows now are half old school freak and half new school freak. Some songs are improvised from the ground up, and some album cuts are interpreted live. 'We love the songs we've written and recorded, but improvising is always at the core of what we do,' says guitarist Stu Wershof. 'So we perform semi-arranged versions of our songs.'

Bass player Matt Walkey adds, 'the songs are a starting point, but we'll change the tempo, feature a singer on an instrumental track, try to surprise ourselves and our audience.'

The spirit of the parade is always there, and shows often begin with the band marching in. The Freaks even teamed up with the Calgary Junos host committee to lead a parade through downtown Calgary in February 2016.

A million and a half shows since the first parade, Freak Motif is proud to have shared the stage and recording studio with great Canadian bands such as The Souljazz Orchestra, Busty and the Bass, Five Alarm Funk, KC Roberts, Kalmunity Vibe Collective, as well as afrobeat pioneers Antibalas. Tour Highlights include: the Victoria Ska Festival, Calgary Improv Festival, Smithers Midsummer Music Festival, Astral Harvest, Cirque de la Nuit, Inshala, and Twin Butte Soulfest.

Freak Motif's second full length album HOT PLATE is available now.
